Premier League
Shock defeat for United as the Premier League's bottom side ruin Sir Alex Ferguson's birthday celebrations.
United were celebrating the 70th birthday of their enigmatic manager Sir Alex Ferguson and a single point would be enough to put his side top for the new year. There was no place in the squad for Wayne Rooney as Manchester United's starting line up had an unfamiliar feel with the likes of Rafael, Park Ji-sung and Dimitar Berbatov handed starts.
And it was the home side that started the brighter with Nani looking particularly sharp. United were struck a blow after fifteen minutes when Dimitar Berbatov brought down Chris Samaba in the box giving Blackburn a penalty and an unlikely early lead as Yakubu dispatched the penalty calmly. The goal shook the home side and despite dictating the play they were struggling to carve any clear cut chances.
Rovers were defending well, limiting the reds to half chances with Phil Jones' poke towards goal blocked in the area before Chicharito saw his shot whistle past the post. The Champions were huffing and puffing as Blackburn held onto their lead going into the interval.
The second half saw the introduction of Anderson on for Chicharito as the manager opted to change to a 4-4-2 formation. But United were hit by another blow when in the 51st minute Yakubu grabbed his second after poor defending, the goal giving United a mountain to climb. Straight from the restart United got themselves right back in the mix as Berbatov nodded home from close range to make the score 1-2.
The goal put fire in the United belly as the Old Trafford crowd roared on the reds. On 62 minutes Berbatov grabbed his second firing home from close range following an Antonio Valencia cross. Could United push on to grab the winner after being two goals down? Blackburn soon found their defensive footing again, frustrating the resurgent United.
After 18 minutes of pure United pressure it there was yet another set back for United as following a corner Hanely headed home following poor goalkeeping from David De Gea. United now had ten minutes to find at least one goal. The reds had a lack of options to bring on from the bench with Will Keane brought on five minutes from time in search of an equaliser.
United were deflated by the goal and struggled created any further chances until the final seconds when Phil Jones saw his shot saved off the line as United went down to their second league defeat of the season. The Manchester side missed their chance to move to the top of the table as the season reaches the half way point.

Premier League
Manchester United thrash Wigan to make it five wins on the trot.
It was all change in the starting eleven, as Sir Alex shuffled his pack during the congested run in of festive fixtures. Starts were handed to out of favour Dimitar Berbatov and returning from injury Chicharito. They replaced Danny Welbeck and Wayne Rooney who both started and scored in the 5 - 0 victory over Fulham.
United also had to field a makeshift defence with Michael Carrick and Antonio Valencia deployed at centre and right back respectively. Darron Gibson was handed a rare start in the centre of midfield along side veteran Ryan Giggs.
United got off to an explosive start, taking the lead after just eight minutes when Park Ji-Sung slotted home accurately from a Patrice Evra cross. Wigan responded well to the goal and began pushing United back into their own half with Conor Sammon causing the hosts a lot of problems.
However a contentious refereeing decision was about to sway the game in United's favour as the impressive Sammon saw red for catching Michael Carrick in the face with his arm. Referee Phil Dowd pulled the red card from his pocket as both sets of players seemed stunned by the decision. Despite being a goal and a man down Wigan continued to show heart, not allowing United to take control of the game. In the 41st minute United finally managed to extend their lead as Dimitar Berbatov managed to gain control of Darron Gibson's cross, poking home from four yards.
United went into half time in complete control thanks not only to two sharp strikes, but Conor Sammon's red card. The second half began, and it soon became apparent that Wigan were now resigned to a damage limitation effort, Park almost grabbed his second instantly but he fired his header straight at Ali Al Habsi. Wigan held the reds off for thirteen second half minutes before extending their lead again as Berbatov grabbed his second of the game. The Bulgarian controlled well in the area firing a sharp effort into the roof the net to but the game beyond any doubt.
All Wigan's hard work was to no avail when in the 75th minute Antonio Valencia controlled the ball on the edge of the area a fired an unstoppable strike across the face on goal to make it four. And to rub salt into the wounds three minutes later United were awarded a penalty when Park Ji-Sung was felled on the edge of the area. Berbatov stepped up, completing his hat-trick with a simple finish as he sent Al Habsi the wrong way.
United sent a strong message to the opposition winning their second game on the bounce 5-0 and moving level on points with the leader Manchester City.

Ryan Giggs scores to maintain his record of scoring in every Premier League season as Manchester United put five past Fulham.
After a two game run in centre midfield Phil Jones was reinstated to his more familiar position at centre back as Ryan Giggs filled his midfield role. However the young English defender took an early blow as he received an elbow to the face whilst challenging Clint Dempsey in the air.
After just five minutes United made the breakthrough when Danny Welbeck slotted home from close range following a Luis Nani break down the left. The home side falling behind to the first notable piece of play from either side due to the length of the stoppage taken for the injury to Phil Jones.
The away crowd were making the majority of the noise after seeing their side take such an early advantage. The home side soon got into their stride matching United for possession, pushing the visitors back into their own half. On the 20 minute mark Phil Jones had to be replaced by Ashley Young, the second minute injury proving too much for the United man. The change saw Antonio Valenica drop to right back with Chris Smalling moving inside .
Following an extended spell of United pressure the reds added a second when Luis Nani rose highest to meet a Ryan Giggs cross following a short corner after 28 minutes. United were taking charge of the game and just after the half hour mark United had a strong penalty shout when Phillip Senderos felled Danny Welbeck in the area. The United the appeals were waved away by referee Rob Halsey.
In the 42nd minute United extended their lead further, as Nani was involved again as he squared a simple ball to Ryan Giggs on the edge of the area. The Welshman's tame shot took a huge deflection looping over David Stockdale's head to put United in complete control going into the interval. Fulham will have been disappointed with their first half efforts, as they allowed the visitors to boss the game from the outset.
The start to the second half was even, with both sides enjoying long spells on the ball. It was Fulham who almost gave themselves a lifeline as Lindegaard had to get down well to stop a Clint Dempsey header. The home side were in the ascendency and they came close again as a John Arne Riise free-kick flashed just wide.
United were struggling to impose themselves as they had done in the first half and took another injury blow just before the hour, as first half substitute Ashley Young was forced off, Park Ji-Sung coming on to replace the winger.
The Cottagers were proving to be much more capable, as the half wore on they looked the most likely to score next, with Andy Johnson twice coming close, both times being denied by Anders Lindegaard. Two minutes from time Wayne Rooney fired a powerful drive past Stockdale to make the score 4-0. And to add insult to injury United made it five as second half substitute Dimitar Berbatov calmly finished with a cheeky bit of skill to settle the tie in the final minute.
United's dominate first half display meant the job was done at half time and despite Fulham's second half industry they didn't have enough to trouble the Champions, two late goals finishing off the performance. United will be happy with picking up their seventh away victory of the season but the loss of two more key players to injury will be a major disappointment to the manager.

Manchester United comfortably defeat QPR to keep their title charge on course.
Sir Alex Ferguson had the rare opportunity to name an unchanged side from the team that put four past Wolves last Saturday, with his squad incurring no new injuries. This meant Phil Jones again started in the centre of midfield along side Michael Carrick. Danny Welbeck partnered Wayne Rooney upfront.
United made a flying start as Antonio Valencia whipped in a cross from the right with Wayne Rooney capitalising, heading home at the far post within the first minute. The early breakthrough subdued the home crowd as United looked far the better team. Radek Cerny was putting in a big performance in the Rangers goal keeping United's advantage at one goal as he blocked off a Danny Welbeck run in the opening stages.
QPR played their way back into the game with grit and determination not allowing United any time on the ball and even creating a chance of their own when Heidar Helguson headed just over from a Joey Barton cross. As the game neared half time, it was the Manchester side on top of the game, they should have gone ahead when Jonny Evans header hit the bar, moments later Phil Jones shot was well saved after he was one on one with Cerny following a fantastic Wayne Rooney through ball.
United had another chance to got two ahead, but Cerny came to the rescue again palming Valencia's close range shot off the line. QPR almost made United pay for their missed opportunists, but David De Gea was on hand to save a Helguson shot with his feet. United went into half time in complete control off the game but would they be left to rue missed chances in the second half?
United came out of the blocks firing on all cylinders and almost scored as quickly as they did in the first half, in bizarre circumstances. QPR kicked off the second half with only 10 men on the field as Danny Gabbidon was still in the changing rooms receiving treatment. Wayne Rooney charged through on goal but his first touch let him down as the glorious opportunity fizzled out. However it didn't take long for United to double their lead when in the 56th minute Michael Carrick made an impressive run from his own half slotting the ball into the bottom corner from the edge of the area. The goal was Carrick's first for 70 games, his delight was apparent as he celebrated with the fans. The goal deflated QPR's chance of a comeback.
The reds continued to create as Danny Welbeck saw his curling effort well saved again by Cerny, before Phil Jones came close again when he hit the post. QPR should have reduced the deficit when second half substitute DJ Campbell latched onto the end of an excellent Adel Taarabt cross, but he somehow managed to loop his shot over the bar from 5 yards.
United saw the game out to pick up their sixth away victory of the season, already more than their entire campaign last season, however the manager will be unhappy with the amount of missed chances as United could have easily scored five. An important three points as United keep pace with the leaders in the title race.

Premier League
Manchester United bounce back from Champions League disappointment with comprehensive victory over Wolves.
After dropping out of Europe's premier competition United were looking to get back to winning ways at Old Trafford. As United had scored just once in each of their last seven league games, Sir Alex Ferguson opted for an attacking line-up with Danny Welbeck starting up front alongside Wayne Rooney. Antonio Valencia and Luis Nani selected on the wings.
The visitors started the brighter and Stephen Fletcher could have given them a first minute lead, but he flashed his strike from the edge of the area well wide. However United soon settled into the match and became increasingly dominant. Phil Jones and Michael Carrick in the centre of midfield were putting in a commanding performance not allowing Wolves any time on the ball.
Wayne Hennessey was called into action when Wayne Rooney fired in a shot from a tight angle as United went in search of the opening goal. It didn't take long for it to come when Luis Nani put the home side ahead. after he receiving the ball on the left, he managed cut inside to the edge of the area and unleash a powerful drive into the bottom corner to give United the advantage.
The reds didn't look like resting on their one goal lead and were looking to kill the game off early. And that they did when just before the half hour mark, Wayne Rooney scored his first Premier League goal since September's 3-1 win over Chelsea, firing past Hennessey in the same corner as Nani had moments earlier.
United went into the second half in completed control of the game. So it came as a shock when seconds after the restart Stephen Fletcher gave the visitors a lifeline, when he converted from the far post following a Matt Jarvis cross.
The goal galvanised Wolves who for the next ten minutes looked to get themselves on level terms. However their play was sloppy and in the 56th minute Nani killed the game off with his second of the game, poking home from close range following a superb Valencia cross.
United were now in complete control and added to their lead when Rooney picked up his second with a precision volley following another Valencia cross. Second half substitute Federico Macheda almost made it five late on but his clumsy close range effort was easily stopped by the Welsh number one.
United have now made it five wins from their last six, with particularly impressive performances from Nani, Rooney, Valencia and Carrick. The reds move to within two points of league leaders Manchester City, in pursuit of their 20th title.

Champions League Group Stage
Manchester United crash out at the group stages of the Champions League for only the 3rd time in 17 years.
United went into the tie only requiring a point to secure qualification to the knock out rounds of the Champions League. Last years finalists had made tough work of the group stages after three draws in five games, including a 3-3 at home to Basel.
United were without the suspended Michael Carrick as Phil Jones was selected in the centre of midfield for the second game running. Wayne Rooney started as the lone front man after the recent injuries to Dimitar Berbatov and Chicharito.
And it was the visitors who started in fine form, exploding out of the blocks looking to calm their nerves early in the game. United were completely dominating possession and looked to be on the brink of striking when, against the run of play FC Basel took the lead. When Xherdan Shaqiri fired in a cross from the left wing United defender Chris Smalling was down in the penalty area with a head injury. Marcos Streller was at hand at the back post to fire the Swiss Champions into an early lead. United were now on the back foot and needed to score at least one goal to have any chance of qualification.
United were stunned by the goal and despite dominating the game in midfield struggled to create any chances. On the stroke of half an hour United should have been level when Rooney inexplicably failed to turn the ball into the net from 2 yards after a superb Nani cross. The Portuguese winger was causing Basel the most problems, and was at the heart of every United attack, pushing his team forward, terrorising left back Joo-ho Park in the process.
For all their promise the reds play in the final third continued to frustrate and in the 44th minute they took another blow. Captain Nemanja Vidic fell awkwardly on his knee and it was instantly apparent he was in agony. United's recent injury woes continued as their talismanic captain was forced off. They went into half time with everything to do, but the hope remained, as one unanswered goal would still secure a stop in the last 16.
At the start of the second period United almost made an instant impact when Wayne Rooney broke on the left, cutting inside of the edge of the area, his curled effort went agonisingly wide. The game continued in a similar pattern, with United dominating the game but struggling to make the break through. David De Gea had to be on full alert when he excellently turned over an Alexander Frei free-kick.
United's probing almost paid off when Markus Steinhofer hammered the ball against his own cross bar following another Nani cross. United's time was running out and as they pushed everyone forward it was heart break for last years runners up, when Xherdan Shaqiri crossed following a rare Basel break, Chris Smalling failed to clear as A. Frei headed home from close range. United had three minutes to score two goals. The Europa League beckoned for a lacklustre United side. Phil Jones pulled one goal back in the dying embers of the game but it was to little to late and United dropped out of the Champions League at the group stage for the first time in six years.

Premier League
Phil Jones grabs his first United goal, as the reds record their fourth 1-0 victory in five league games.
In the corresponding fixture last season, United escaped with a point after being 2-0 down, this year they were looking to take home all three points to keep pressure on league leaders Manchester City.
Phil Jones was chosen to partner Michael Carrick in the centre of midfield, as Sir Alex tried to discover his strongest pairing for the position. Anders Lindegaard was also given the nod ahead of David De Gea in goal.
The game started badly for the Champions with Chicharito being forced off with injury after just eight minutes. The Mexican went to ground in the penalty area despite no contact with a Villa player and has suspectedly suffered ankle ligament damage, which will reportedly keep him out of action for up to four weeks. Antonio Valencia was brought on to replace him.
United soon got over the shock of losing a key player, and were commanding the game, rarely relinquishing possession to their opponents. In the 20th minute this dominance paid off when an excellent United build up saw Phil Jones side-foot home from close range following a sublime cross from Luis Nani. The 19 year old claiming his first senior goal whilst putting the visitors ahead.
The home side struggled to impose themselves on the game, and United came close to doubling their lead when first Nani saw his header saved by Shay Given and then Valencia saw his 25 yard effort fly just over the crossbar. The game was hit by another injury in the 35th minute, when Villa 'keeper Given had to be withdrawn for a pulled hamstring.
The half petered out without further incident, with United in full control. Alex McLeish will have been disappointed with his sides performance and looked to fire them up for the second period.
However this was not the case, the home side delivered almost no attacking threat as United continued to boss the game. The reds continued to press but struggled to break Aston Villa down. The closest either side came was in the 75th minute when James Collins saw his header tipped over by Anders Lindegaard, in what was proving to be a dull half of football. And United thought they'd secured a second goal in the final minute when substitute Danny Welbeck finished well from close range, only for the effort to be ruled offside.
Manchester United held on, securing their fifth away win of the season (as many as the secured in the entire campaign last year). An efficient performance in a game where they were never required to get out of 2nd gear. United will now look forward to their midweek encounter with FC Basel to secure Champions League progression.

Carling Cup Quarter Final
United's kids stumble to quarter final defeat to a defiant Crystal Palace side.
The starting line up came as a shock to the United faithful as Sir Alex named internationals amongst the starting XI. The likes of Dimitar Berbatov, Park Ji-Sung and Antonio Valencia were fielded, and can be explained as them needing match time. There was still plenty of youth present, with the likes of Federico Macheda, Ben Amos, and Mame Biram Diouf all awarded starts.
United started well, dominating possession and earning early numerous corners in the early stages of the game, however Crystal Palace had a game plan of getting men behind the ball and it was working well, as the home side struggled to make any clear chances. Crystal Palace also posed a threat of their own through Wilfried Zaha and Sean Scannell who didn't look afraid to run at the United defence.
A lacklustre first half came to end with the most noticeable event was Fabio being replaced by youngster Ezekiel Fryers due to a 37th minute injury. Another change for United was forced at half time as Dimitar Berbatov, who had taken a knock to his ankle, was replaced by another promising youth talent Ravel Morrison.
United came out in the second half with renewed energy, Antonio Valencia looking most likely to make an impact on the game. And after just five second half minutes he almost did, when Palace defender Anthony Gardner stumbled over the ball releasing Valencia clear. However the Ecuadorian pulled his shot agonisingly wide of Lewis Price's goal. United were getting into their stride looking the most likely to score.
It didn't take much longer for the opening goal to come, but surprisingly it was against the run of play. When second half Palace substitute Darren Ambrose picked the ball up just inside the United half no one expected him to turn and fire into the top corner from nearly 40 yards, but that he did, leaving Ben Amos in the United goal no chance. The 5,000 visiting fans went wild as they saw their side take a shock lead with a stunning strike.
United were invigorated by the goal and it only took four minutes for the home side to pull things level. When Federico Macheda was hauled down in the box, he made no mistake from the penalty spot, sending Price the wrong way. This is where you would have thought United pushed on to win the game on a counter, but this simply did not happen. Palace continually kept United at bay. 90 minutes were up and we were into extra time. United had been forced into another substitution in the second half with Rafael picking up United's third injury of the night, Paul Pogba was his replacement. United's team was starting to look very inexperienced and in the end it was this that cost them the tie.
In the 98th minute Glenn Murray headed home from an offside position following a rare free kick in the United half, miraculously for the second home game in the row the referee's assistant made a critical error, allowing the goal to stand.
United just could not find a second equaliser despite Macheda and Valencia coming close in the dying embers of the game. Crystal Palace held on for a famous victory, which was only United's second defeat of the season in all competitions. A disappointing result will perhaps be a blessing in disguise, as United now avoid a two legged semi-final in a competition which will always be their lowest priority.

Match Report: Manchester United 1 - 1 Newcastle United
Manchester United 1 - 1 Newcastle United
Saturday 26/11/2011
Premier League
Manchester United are denied all three points after contentious penalty decision.
Wayne Rooney was deemed fit to start after missing the mid week draw with Benfica. Nemanja Vidic also found himself back in the starting line up after missing the draw through suspension. United were looking to build on the three consecutive league 1-0 victories since the 1-6 loss to Manchester City.
And it was United who started the brighter forcing Newcastle back into their own half. Chicharito was looking sharp with two early shots on goal, both comfortably saved by Newcastle 'keeper Tim Krul. It didn't take the Magpies long to find their feet with Jonas Gutierrez and ex-red Gabriel Obertan looking threatening down the wings.
Neither side was able to dominant the game, with both sides being careless is possession. In the 30th minute Luis Nani released Chicharito through on goal with a cutting through ball, but the Mexican scuffed his shot over the bar. Seconds later Tim Krul made a fine reaction save to deny Ryan Giggs following a cross into the box from Fabio.
United struggled to maintain the pressure and the game soon fell back into a midfield battle. The sides went into half time level, Newcastle had been more than able to cope with United. Neither side made any changes during the interval, but it was Manchester United that came out with increased vigour as it only took four minutes for United to take the lead as Chicharito was in the right place at the right time as the ball ricocheted off him and into the net following a Wayne Rooney free kick.
Newcastle were not deterred by the goal, and in the 59th minute when Fabricio Coloccini forced David De Gea into a world class reaction save. Moments later Newcastle were awarded a penalty, replayed showed Rio Ferdinand had made a clean challenge on Hatem Ben-Arfa, a truly awful decision from the linesman. Demba Ba despatched the spot kick to bring the scores level. Sir Alex Ferguson, enraged by the poor decision fired his team up to try and make things right.
With twelve minutes to go Jonas Gutierrez picked up his second yellow card following a late challenge from behind on Luis Nani. From the results free kick Tim Krul made a stunning close range save from a powerful Nemanja Vidic header.
The final stages were manic as first Ashley Young hits the post with a driven shot, shortly followed by a goal-line clearance from Danny Simpson after a flicked Chicharito's header. Deep into stoppage time United thought they had won it as Chicharito tapped home from close range, but it wasn't to be as he was ruled offside. Replays seemed to show he was in fact on side.
1-1 it stayed and United can feel incredibly hard done by as they drop two more points in the title race.

Champions League Group Stage
Manchester United stumble at home leaving everything to play for going into their final group C clash.
United were without injured Wayne Rooney and suspended captain Nemanja Vidic for the Old Trafford encounter with Benfica. Instead we saw a return of Dimitar Berbatov up front with summer signing Phil Jones starting in the centre of defence along side Rio Ferdinand. Ashley Young was making his first start after a three week lay off with a toe injury and found himself playing as the support striker, with Luis Nani and Antonio Valencia deployed on the wings.
United were stunned just three minutes in when Nicolas Gaitan broke down the left, playing a low cross into the box which Phil Jones inadvertently turned into his own net. A cruel piece of luck for the 19 year old. United found themselves behind and in need of a win to have any realistic chance of topping the group. The home sides play was lumbered with a real lack of cutting edge in the final third. Benfica were looking to hit United again on the counter with Gaitan and Pablo Aimar, who both looked particularly threatening.
Twenty minutes in, the hosts finally started to get some rhythm to their passing. On the half an hour mark United were level after Berbatov rose highest to meet Nani's cross. Berbatov's sublime finish was his first Champions League goal since 2008 and now they were back in it. The crowd roared as United looked to push themselves into the lead. Mere moments later this almost happened when Ashley Young was one on one with the Benfica 'keeper following a precise through ball from Berbatov. Artur smothered Young's shot well as United missed their opportunity to go in front. Seconds later Benfica broke and David De Gea had to be on full alert to palm away Pablo Aimar's powerful drive.
Following a frantic few minutes of play the game calmed down into half time with the score still one a piece. The second half started like the first with the visitors looking composed on the ball and not giving United's midfield time to breathe. However like the first again United began to find their feet as the half went on. Fabio wasted a golden opportunity as he attempted to chip Artur from close range, where the Portuguese 'keeper simply caught the ball. As we reached the hour mark United made their pressure tell, following a penalty area scramble Patrice Evra swung in a quality cross from the left which Darren Fletcher dispatched from close range after a second bite at the cherry.
United were ahead in the tie for the first time, and their lack of concentration following the goal would be their downfall on the night. A mere 80 seconds after the restart Pablo Aimar levelled things once again as he poked home from close range following an ill-advised pass out of defence from David De Gea. This lack of composure meant all United's hard work had been undone in an instant, as they found themselves back at square one.
United struggled to replicate the pressure which had managed to put them ahead, and one clear cut chance they forged was wasted, as Dimitar Berbatov volleyed over from 10 yards. 2-2 it finished as United had drawn their 3rd game of the campaign leaving them them needing at least a draw from their final group game away at FC Basel to ensure qualification.

Match Report: Swansea 0 - 1 Manchester United
Swansea 0 - 1 Manchester United
Saturday 19/11/2011
Premier League
Manchester United record their third successive 1 - 0 victory in the Premier League.
After the international break United were looking to continue their good form, which had seen them win their last five games in all competitions without conceding a single goal. Wayne Rooney found himself in a more familiar role up front, with Micheal Carrick and Ryan Giggs deployed in central midfield. United were facing a Swansea side who were unbeaten at home and had only conceded one goal at the Liberty Stadium all season.
The opening stage were cagey with neither side taking control of the game. Despite this the first real action of the game resulted in a goal, when after 11 minutes Ryan Giggs took advantage of a defensive error by Angel Rangel, squaring the ball to Chicharito who simply dinked the ball over Michel Vorm in the Swansea goal to give the Champions the lead.
Swansea looked stunned as they had more than equalled their opponents, but found themselves behind. The game continued to pass with little incident until the 22nd minute when Scott Sinclair found himself 5 yards from goal destined to score, however he managed to get his feet completely mixed up, letting United off the hook.
As the half grew older Michael Carrick found his feet as United dominated the rest of the half without really threatening to extent the lead. The Swansea manager Brendan Rogers needed to change things in the second half if his side were going to maintain their unbeaten home record. The introduction of Joe Allen seemed to have the desired effect as the hosts came out with increased vigour in the second period.
Sinclair almost made up for his woeful miss earlier as he forced David De Gea into a good save at the near post. The Swans were coming into their own, gaining more of the possession, showing United that they weren't going to get it all their own way. However the Welsh side struggled to create any clear cut chances and as the game drew to a close it was United who almost wrapped up all three points when first Phil Jones struck the post after a powerful run from right back, followed by Luis Nani who curled a low shot inches wide with seconds remaining.
United hung on for the victory and another improved defensive performance, which can be attributed to the return to action of captain Nemanja Vidic. The Champions stay five points behind their city rivals in the race for the title, but with 26 games to go there is still everything to play for.

Match Report: Manchester United 1 - 0 Sunderland
Manchester United 1 - 0 Sunderland
Saturday 05/11/2011
Premier League
Manchester United marked 25 years service from Sir Alex Ferguson with all 3 points at Old Trafford.
The day was, for once, not just about the game as the astonishing achievements of Sir Alex were the flavour of the day. Before the match Fergie was given a guard of honour by both sides, in his 25 years at the club he has enjoyed unprecedented success both domestically and in Europe. The big surprise came as the North Stand was renamed the Sir Alex Ferguson Stand, a fitting tribute to the greatest manager the game has ever seen.
There was still a game of football to be played as United lined up against a Sunderland side that included former reds Wes Brown and Kieran Richardson. Anders Lindegaard was preferred in goal ahead of David De Gea, with Wayne Rooney again deployed in central midfield as he was in the 2-0 victory over Otelul Galati. After only moments of play the game came to a stand still as Sunderland forward Connor Wickham had to be stretchered off following a bad fall. Sunderland were forced into an early change with Ji Dong-Won coming on to replace him after only four minutes.
The black cats were defending in numbers and for long periods of the half had all 11 men behind the ball. United were struggling to break them down or find any rhythm at all. Chances were very few and far between, Sunderland's organised defence keeping United at bay. This tactic saw the visitors reduced to trying to hit United on the break through Nicklas Bendtner. It took until first half stoppage time for United to make the breakthrough, when Ex-red Wes Brown headed into his own net following a Nani corner. United had the lead going into the break to the relief of the 76,000 inside Old Trafford. Their team had not played well, with perhaps the occasion hampering the performance.
In the second half United were more sprightly and were playing with increased urgency. However the game continued without incident until the 64th minute when Kieran Richardson managed to clear Chicharito's header off the line following another superb cross from Nani.
There was a moment of contention late on when Sunderland thought they had won a penalty. Assistant referee Jake Collin flagged for a penalty, it looked at first that it had been awarded. However the referee overturned the decision instead awarding United a free kick in their own box. Replays showed Lee Mason had made the correct call, it had in fact been Ji- Dong Won that had handled in the area. Sixteen minutes from time Keiren Westwood kept the score to just 1 - 0 when he completed a phenomenal double save first stopping a Wayne Rooney shot before tipping over Patrice Evra's effort.
United held on for all three points in what was a game that took second stage to celebration of Sir Alex Ferguson's success at the club. The Old Trafford side have now kept four clean sheets in a row in all competitions, winning all four games. This will be a welcome return to form for the Manager and fans alike following the 1-6 loss to Manchester City.

Manchester United 2 - 0 Otelul Galati
Wednesday 02/11/2011
Champions League Group Stage
Manchester United moved top of Group C after a low key win at Old Trafford.
The positional change of Wayne Rooney was the main talking point as the team sheet was announced, as we saw the United top scorer start in central midfield. This deeper role left the striking spots up for grabs, and starts were awarded to Dimitar Berbatov and Michael Owen. The duo had had limited game time this season and were looking to make a big impression. Rio Ferdinand was reinstated at centre back, replacing the suspended Nemanja Vidic.
It was the home side who started the stronger putting Otelul under immense pressure with their high tempo passing game. It didn't take long for this pressure to tell, when after just 8 minutes Phil Jones broke down the right and fired across the face of goal, Antonio Valencia had an easy tap in to take the pressure off United. Michael Owen had made a dash to the near post in the build up, his determination had cost him, as moments after the goal he was withdrawn for picking up a muscle injury in the lunge. Chicharito was his replacement for the remain 80 minutes of play.
The early goal had settled the United nerves, but perhaps it had come too soon, as they struggled to settle into the game, being far too sloppy in possession. Otelul were getting men behind the ball and United were finding it hard to break the Romanian outfit down. As the game developed the visitors were finding themsevles with plenty of time on the ball, but lacked cutting edge, failing to create any chances of note.
Phil Jones from left back was providing United's strongest attacking threat with his marauding runs, and was unlucky not to double United's advantage when his curling shot was headed wide for a corner. On the stroke of half time the hosts almost threw their lead away when an Nani lost the ball deep in his own half, this gave Ionut Neagu a clear shot on goal, David De Gea was equal to the shot and beat the ball away well.
An unspectacular half, with United holding just a single goal lead meant the result was far from in the bag. If the fans were expecting a demolition of the Romanian minnows then it wasn't to come, as hosts were continually subdued in the second half. The resilience of Otelul was paying off as the enjoyed long periods of possession, and for a spell looked likely to pull things level. United weren't doing themselves any favours as Chicharito and Anderson in particular were incredibly sloppy with the ball.
Wayne Rooney's central role was proving to be a plus point as he sprayed quality passes around the field, working hard at both ends of the pitch, more than warrenting his man of the match award.
The hosts mopped things up late on when Rooney struck a shot from outside the box, it took a heavy deflection giving the Otelul keeper no chance. This was to be the last flash of excitement in a routine victory for United. The performance from the Old Trafford side was below par, but they did what was required to move to the top of Champions League Group C, after Benfica had drawn 1-1 at home to Basel.

Match Report: Everton 0 - 1 Manchester United
Everton 0 - 1 Manchester United
Saturday 29/10/2011
Premier League
A resilient Manchester United side grind out all three points at Goodison Park.
Manchester United were looking to build on their mid week victory over Aldershot Town, and were in league action for the first time since losing 1-6 at home to Manchester City. Jonny Evans returned to the starting line-up after serving a one match ban for the sending off in the derby. United also starting with an attacking trio of Wayne Rooney, Danny Welbeck and Chicharito.
The match started with a blistering intensity, as both sides create chances within the opening minutes. Park Ji-Sung side footed a close range shot straight into Tim Howard in the Everton goal, just moments after Seamus Coleman had had a low drilled shot well saved by David De Gea. It was a high tempo start the game, but began to settle with United controlling the game in midfield.
And after 19 minutes they made this possession pay when Chicharito side-footed home from close range, following a superb cross from Patrice Evra. The away side had taken the lead, and had a spring in their step. United were looking to extend their advantage. A powerful attacking run from Phil Jones was stopped in the area through a last gasp challenge from Leighton Baines.
As we passed the half hour mark Everton began to get on top, winning a dangerous free kick on the edge on the United area. The free kick was chagered down, but in the following play Leon Osman had a close range shot saved by De Gea. Seconds later Everton had another chance to level when Jack Rodwell blazed a shot wide from a decent position, following sloppy defensive play from United. Everton come close yet again when on 40 minutes Leighton Baines hit the cross bar with a free kick from the edge of the area.
United held onto their lead going into half time and the second half was poised perfectly. Neither side were able to gain a foothold on the game in the early stages of the half, both being wasteful in possession. However as the game drew closer to the hour mark it was Everton again dominating the play with United reduced to trying to break on the counter. Even the introduction of Luis Nani and Dimitar Berbatov, wasn't helping United get on the front foot, as Everton continued to probe.
The Goodison Park crowd howled in anguish as the home side had a penalty appeal waved away in the closing stages, replays showed it would have been a very harsh decision, if awarded. United tried to retain possession as they ran the clock down, and 0 - 1 it stayed as United took all three points in what had been a very even game. The poaching instincts of Chicharito are what separated the two sides, as United claimed their 3rd away victory of the season.

Carling Cup
Manchester United dispatched Aldershot Town with ease to progress to the last 8 of the Carling Cup.
United made 11 changes from the side that lost 1-6 to Manchester City on Sunday and were looking to get back to winning ways . The majority of the changes were to be expected, with fringe players such as Dimitar Berbatov, Michael Owen and Anders Lindegaard coming in to replace rested players. Overall the United side was strong, and with this, any hope Aldershot had of getting an easy ride was quashed.
It was United who started the stronger, putting Aldershot under a lot of pressure in the opening stages. The League 2 side were looking overwhelmed by the visitors capability to retain possession. And after 15 minutes the Premier League Champions dominance paid off, as Dimitar Berbatov turned and slotted home calmly after some sublime passing play from Park Ji-Sung and the returning Tom Cleverley. Cleverley was making his first start since picking up an injury in the 5-0 victory over Bolton in early September. As the half wore on the home side's confidence grew, managing to subdue United for long spells. McGlashan's pace was giving Aldershot an attacking presence, as he got behind the United defence on more than one occasion.
However the hosts were unable to create any chances of note, and on 41 minutes they were punished. Berbatov was involved again as he laid off Owen to make the score 0-2. Aldershot were far from being humiliated, but were simply being outclassed by their opponents. This didn't deter the home crowd as they continued to urge their side forward as the second half began. They were soon subdued though, as Antonio Valencia fired in a stunning strike from 25 yards three minutes after the restart, giving Ross Warner no chance. United were in cruise control and used their three goal advantage to field some younger talent with the likes of Ravel Morrison, Paul Pogba and Michael Keane coming on, looking to make an impression.
The tempo slowed as the game drew to its climax, with United comfortably progressing to the next round. Dimitar Berbatov had made a particularly strong case for his return to more regular first team football, with his goal and assist. In addition were the promising performances of Morriosn,Pogba, Keane, and Ezekiel Fryers who all looked very comfortable on the ball. Meaning there will be lots of positives for United to take away from this game, as well as exercising some of the demons left after Sundays defeat.

Premier League
Manchester United crash to their first home defeat in 18 months against their cross city rivals.
In the build up to the game it was announced that club captain Nemanja Vidic wasn't ready to start as Jonny Evans retained his place at centre back, alongside Rio Ferdinand. Confirmation came from Sir Alex Ferguson that after Vidic's six week injury lay off, that he wasn't quite ready to start such a big game. Danny Welbeck was preferred to partner Wayne Rooney up front, ahead of Chicharito.
And in the opening stages it was all United, as the home team pushed City way back into their own half. Ashley Young was running rampage down the left flank drawing multiple fouls from James Milner and Micah Richards, both parties incredibly lucky to avoid yellow cards. However United were not converting this pressure into chances as the killer ball evaded them. After 22 minutes a clear cut chance came, but it was completely against the run of play, as Mario Balotelli stroked the ball home from just outside the box to give the visitors a 0-1 advantage. Balotelli was booked during the celebrations for removing his shirt and revealing a t-shirt baring the slogan "Why Always Me?" United will have felt hard done by, as up until this moment they had dominated possession 70%-30%.
The rest of the half was much more even, with neither team able to control the game. City maintained their lead going into the break, and the match was well poised for exciting second half, with United looking to turn the tie around. 2 minutes into the second half United's task got a whole lot harder, when Jonny Evans was turned on the edge of the area by Balotelli and in a desperate attempt to regain possession hauled down the Italian striker. Evans was the last man, and the red card was inevitable, United now needed to play almost the entire second half with only 10 men. They didn't let the sending affect their game, dominating the next 10 minutes, despite City having the numerical advantage. But still United couldn't find their cutting edge, and as the game wore on the away side began to impose themselves on the game.
With an hour on the clock City went two goals ahead, and it was Balotelli again who latched onto James Milner's cross. United were in real trouble, with their chances of saving the game fading. In the 69th minute it was 0-3, and it was Sergio Aguero's turn to get amongst the goals as he slotted home from close range. United's depleted defence were tiring, with the league leaders looking to increase their margin to 5 points. A glimmer of hope arrived with 10 minutes to go when Darren Fletcher played an excellence one-two with second half substitute Chicharito, to reduce the deficit to 1-3, with what was the attacking move of the game. The home crowd were invigorated and tried to spur United on, but the game was beyond them. 1-3 would have been a fair reflection of the game. However the game took a turn for the bizarre when in stoppage time City managed to score 3 more unanswered goals, two from Edin Dzeko and one from man of the match David Silva, as United fell apart at the back. The City fans went wild as their team had produced an unbelievable 1-6 win at Old Trafford.
United were stunned as they fell to their worst home defeat since 1955. There were no boo's around the ground as the team left the field, with chats of support for the home side, showing that this is nothing other than a freak result. With a quarter of the season gone United are in a stronger position than this time last season, and will be looking to get back to winning ways when they meet Aldershot Town in the Carling cup on Tuesday night.

Champions League Group Stage
Manchester United grind out their first Champions League win of the season away at the Romanian champions.
After drawing their two opening Champions League fixtures against Benfica and Basel, United were looking to get their Group stage back on track against Otelul Galati. Wayne Rooney found himself back in the United starting line up, as nine changes were made from the team that drew 1-1 away at Liverpool. Nemanja Vidic was the other notable inclusion, as he made his first United start since the opening day, following a six week lay off with injury.
United started the game brightly, dominating possession, trying to find their rhythm. The home side were in awe of Manchester United, giving them far too much time on the ball. But it was Otelul side who created the first chance, when Vidic's a weak pass was intercepted by Bratislav Punosevac, however his shot was tame and comfortably saved by Anders Lindegaard. Michael Carrick had United's best chance of the first half when he latched on the end of a Nani cross, but his shot was not the best, and flew over the bar.
The opening 45 minutes had been poor, with neither side able find their cutting edge. in the second period United came out with renewed vigour and almost took the lead when Nani crossed in for Wayne Rooney, who turned well in the box and shot just wide. And it didn't take long for United to make the breakthrough, when just after the hour when Costin handled in the area, Rooney was on hand to tuck the penalty away.
Moments after taking the lead, United were stunned by a set back, when returning captain Vidic was dismissed for a high challenge. On replay this seemed to be a very harsh decision, while his foot was high, no contact was made with the opponent. The sending off galvanised the home side as they finally began to get a foothold in the game. They managed to create decent chances through Costin and Antal, who wasted a great opportunity, heading over the bar when he was unmarked in the United area.
As the game wore on United found themselves again and moments from time Nani saw a ferocious 30 yard shot hit the post. Minutes later United wrapped up all 3 points when Rooney dispatched another penalty, after Antal had brought him down in the area, with the England striker finishing even more calmly than the first. United had overcome the adversity of having Vidic sent off early in the second half, by dispatching the Champions League new comers Otelul Galati to claim all 3 points.

Match Report: Liverpool 1 - 1 Manchester United
Saturday 15/10/2011
Premier League
Manchester United grab their first point at Anfield for three years, maintaining their unbeaten start to the season.
Sir Alex Ferguson shuffled the pack ahead of their encounter away at Liverpool, with Wayne Rooney, Nani, Anderson and Chicharito finding themselves on the bench. Instead in came, Danny Welbeck, Park Ji-Sung, Ryan Giggs and Darren Fletcher. The omission of Rooney was a result of his sending off for England the previous week, with the manager explaining 'his head wasn't in the right place'. United had lost their last three league visits to Anfield, and were looking to put an end to this run to keep them top of the premier league.
It was Liverpool who made the brighter start to the game, with the return of their captain Steven Gerrard, for his first start of the season, spurring the home side on as they pushed United back into their own half. The game soon evened out, play was scrappy with both sides wasteful in possession. Chances were few and far between, and it took until 16 minutes for the first half chance, when Phil Jones rose to meet a Patrice Evra cross, which he headed wide from close range. Both sides seemed nervous as the game was becoming a midfield battle with neither team looking like making a breakthrough.
It took until the 35th minutes for the first shot on target when Luis Suarez managed to turn Johnny Evans in the box, but his shot was straight at David De Gea who beat the ball away comfortably. The half finished goalless, with both sides struggling to get going, in what had been an edgy first half.
Both United and Liverpool were more composed on the ball as the second half began, and it was the hosts who were looking more of a threat as both Suarez and Gerrard had shots saved by De Gea. United's Spanish 'keeper was looking solid between the sticks, keeping Liverpool at bay with ease for the first hour. However this was about to change, when after 67 minutes Charlie Adam went down easily on the edge of the area following the slightest of touches from Rio Ferdinand. Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard stood over the free kick, and proceeded to strike the ball through the United wall to put the home side 1-0 up. Replays showed that Ryan Giggs was at fault, moving in the wall allowing Gerrard's shot past him, giving De Gea no chance.
There was an instant response from the United manager, who brought on Wayne Rooney and Nani, as they now needed to come from a goal behind. The match opened up as United piled forward, determined to escape from Anfield with at least a point. Phil Jones was replaced by Chicharito with fifteen minutes left, as the visitors went all out for the equaliser. And after only a matter of minutes of coming on it was Chicharito who squared things up, heading home from close range following a Danny Welbeck flick on from a Nani corner. United were jubilant as they had forced their way back into the game However a minute after the restart they almost threw all the hard work away when Dirk Kuyt had a close range shot brilliantly saved following an excellent early cross from Stuart Downing. Moments later the home side were denied again by De Gea as he managed to claw away a chipped volley from Jordan Henderson in the 90th minute.
1-1 it finished, as both sides had rallied in the second half making it an exciting finish to one of the biggest games in world football. By only picking up a point United had relinquished the top spot to their cross city rivals, but coming away with a point from Anfield has to be seen as a point gained. United remain unbeaten in the league after 8 games, with Manchester City up next in the league as they travel to Old Trafford next weekend.

Official Manchester United Museum and Stadium Tour
Official Manchester United Museum and Stadium Tour
Old Trafford
Last week I was lucky enough to have a the full Official Manchester United Museum and Stadium Tour , courtesy of my place of work. I was delighted with the opportunity to take the tour for the first time since I was a child, and though I have been to the stadium numerous times to watch our beloved United, it was interesting to see the history and the usually unseen areas of the stadium.
Unlike the usual tour, due to me being there with work, we started in the Trafford suite directors lounge where there is a stunning view of the stadium.
And after a brief introduction we were taken down to sit in the directors box where we told a brief history of the stadium. As you can see it was an excellent day for the tour.
Afterwards we walked round to the dressing room, where you can see the players shirts laid out in their usual seats.
After the stadium tour (which took around 40 minutes) we took a look around the museum. For a club with such a rich and proud history, it is truly breath taking seeing everything the club has achieved. United's humble beginnings as Newton Heath, the Munich Air disaster through to treble winning season of '99 and last years record 19th league title, are brilliantly remembered.
The experience of the Official Manchester United Museum and Stadium Tour is second to non, and as a red I would urge anyone who loves United to take the opportunity to absorb the history of such an amazing club.
